With so many bar stool styles available, it’s easy to see why they are now one of the most stylish kitchen ingredients.

The Story Behind Bar Stools

As far back as the stone age, humans have used elevated seating to distinguish themselves early on from the animal kingdom. In ancient Egypt, Egyptians used both chairs and stools to show their superior social status. Seating continued to be used this way up until the Renaissance when it became more popular. Although thrones were the preferred seating for royalty, many African Kingdoms used stools such as the Golden Stool of Ashanti in Ghana.

Following the Industrial Revolution, the demand for stools increased dramatically with different styles available to more people. Original wooden stools were necessary for many professions such as farming, barbering and cobbling. In the modern day, traditional stools can radiate opulence and style.

How To Choose Your Perfect Bar Stool

When shopping for bar stools, it’s easy to wonder what the difference is between a bar stool and a counter stool. The most fundamental difference is the back. Bar Stools generally have a back which make them more supportive and comfortable, so you can really sit back and relax. Counter stools do not have backs making them much more of a perch.

When choosing the most comfortable bar stools, always start with the height of your island and the height of the bar stool seat. Your ideal bar stool should fit under your countertop with enough space between the seat and the underside of the island to comfortably fit your legs.  The ideal space or ‘sitting room’ is around 20cm.
